"If It Don't Look Right, It Ain't Right!"

I’m not sure when I first heard that quote, but I’ve never forgotten it.

If it don’t look right, it ain’t right!

It’s nothing cryptic.

It simply means, “don’t take everything at face value just because you were told to

How often does that happen?

Damn near every minute of every day, that’s how often.

There should be an instinctive survival factor concerning anything that ‘just doesn’t look right’ or ‘just doesn’t sound right’ because if the natural world can teach us anything, it’s that if it smells like shit, you shouldn’t eat it because it is most likely shit.

Yes, it is a simple matter of instinctual survival.

Repulsion in any form is intended by nature to REPEL us, not draw us in and hold us closer.

It’s the same thing as the pain involved in a burn.

You feel the pain and you know it is not good, so you tend to avoid being burned.

Think of the kid that doesn’t listen when he’s told not to touch the stove and does it anyway and gets burned. Unfortunately for him, he did his own research because it ‘didn’t seem right’ and now he knows that what his Mother told him was right. But, if he chooses to ignore it, then…

Now, let’s not fly off the rails here. I am not advocating for anyone to simply ignore events around them just ‘because it don’t look right’.

Let me be so very crystalline clear…

“If it don’t look right, it ain’t right” simply means that if you get ANY glint of a concern over what you are told or what you see someone doing, then you should QUESTION IT, and NEVER take it as ‘ok’ by its face value.

We all need to trust our human instincts.

They’ve been beaten down and for a lot of people, their instincts have been hosed clean off the driveway like so much dirt, but…our human instincts are still there.

Those who seek to assume control will jump through the roof to convince you that ‘there’s nothing to see here…pay no attention to the man behind the curtain’.

But ‘behind the curtain’ is EXACTLY where we need to go!

QUESTION THE WORLD AROUND YOU AND IN PARTICULAR, QUESTION ANYONE THAT TELLS YOU NOT TO WORRY BECAUSE THEY KNOW WHAT’S BEST FOR YOU!

It reminds me of a line from the movie, The Princess Bride:

“You mock my pain!”

“Life IS pain, Highness. Anyone that tells you different is SELLING something.”

It is oh-so-critically important to remember that human beings can never be free of pain.

It’s become way too easy to ignore things that might cause a little discomfort in our thinking and just ‘allow’ those concepts to creep in without question. It’s become way too easy to take what appears to be the ‘safe’ road. There is NO safe road.

But here’s the only caveat…

If it DON’T look right and you question it and you find out that it really AIN’T right, you have an intellectual – as well as an adult – responsibility to accept what you have learned.

Natural selection demands that you learn from it, because if you ignore and you do not learn from it, you are destined to lose…and lose BIG.

It’s not MY rule. This one is all on nature.

Ignoring what you SEE as wrong and then ignoring what you LEARN to be wrong and then doubling-down on what you KNOW to be wrong is akin to a spoiled child refusing to take ‘no’ for an answer. It’s a childish tantrum in it’s simplest form.

The very act of questioning carries with it an inherent need for maturity.

Think of the old saying, “You can’t keep the boy on the farm once he’s been to Paris!

You should learn from it and grow from there, not recoil and blame everyone else for not blindly believing what you KNOW to be wrong. That’s nothing but the five-year-old’s argument of ‘no, it’s not” to refute anything they don’t like. It has NO substance.

But maybe at some point, Darwin’s theories should just take over.

If you look around, you can already see the start of it…and those people are the ones doing it to themselves – NO ONE ELSE HAS TO DO IT FOR THEM – they’re doing it to themselves.

If it don’t look right, it ain’t right!

“Don’t take everything at face value just because you were told to!”
